MY STORY
Phosphorus was discovered in 1669 by Hennig Brand, who discovered it from urine. Each experiment he had 50-60 buckets to work with. By assuming that matter is composed of atoms and that all samples of any given compound consist of the same combination of these atoms he was able to explain some of Phosphorus's reactions. Dalton also noted that in series of compounds, the ratios of the masses of the second element that combine with a given weight of the first element can be reduced to small whole numbers (the law of multiple proportions). His theory got published by Thomas Thomson in the System of Chemistry in 1807 and in a paper about strontium oxalates published in the Philosophical Transactions. He also published his findings in his work, the New System of Chemical Philosophy. - The manufacture of safety matches, pyrotechnics, incendiary shells, smoke bombs, tracer bullets, etc.
- Fertilizers and Pesticides
- The production of special glasses, such as those used for sodium lamps
- Used to produce fine chinaware and to produce monocalcium phosphate which is used in baking powder
- Is important in the production of steels, phosphor bronze, and many other products
